Interpreting a patient's medical chart and assigning the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes unis the appropriate ICD-9CM and CPT codes which are diagnostic coding programs. Responsible in making sure the assigned codes meet all federal, legal and insurance regulations so payments are received in a timely manner to the health provider for medical services rendered. After the code is determined they must key it into the computer system utilized. This information can then be easily accessible for patient history, services provided and for insurance and billing purposes. A medical coder may "specialize" by a specific department or disease. Must be driven and self-disciplined, there is no room for error; and working with private documents requires the practice of confidentiality/anonymity during and outside the workplace. Attention to detail and excellent communication skills are required, as well as computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Thorough knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare and 3rd party biller's IDX experience a huge plus!
